It originally came with Windows 8 and then I did the free Windows 10 upgrade. I honestly haven't noticed that the keyboard light hasn't been coming on, I'm not even sure when this started. The new installed device for the keyboard is different than the previous device but it did not fix the inoperable function keys. I have also tried going into the Device Manager>Keyboards>right-click>uninstall device, then restarting the computer.

The fixes I've seen online have all said to go to the asus support page and reinstall the ATK driver for my model laptop but when I go to the Asus N56VJ driver page for my model there is no ATK package to download. However, the keyboard backlight and trackpad-on/off keys do not work. My other function keys are operational such as the display dimmer and volume adjust. The only way I know of to operate the keyboard backlight is through the keyboard function keys, fn+F3 or F4 but these function keys do nothing. After the uninstallation process completes, the Asus Installation Wizard will be removed from the list.During boot up, the keyboard backlight lights up for a second then turns off. If they are available, they can enable the backlit by pressing FN and F4 keys (FN+F4 keys) at the same time. For part of Notebook models, backlit function key is F3 and F4 key. Here you can learn more about ASUS keyboard hotkeys introduction. The ATK Hotkey drivers run as a background service in Windows when the computer boots up. The ATK Hotkey Utility is the driver program that allows the function (“F” or “Fn”) keys, also known as hotkeys, on the keyboard of an ASUS or Lenovo laptop to work correctly with the operating system and other installed software. Restart your PC for the change to take effect.
